Boston Pumper Bid
#21
Quote:Skip. Any news on rescue two, and tower ladder replacement. Anyone using the word tiller lately.

TDA's remain a fantasy, sadly. As for R2, as far as I know there are no plans to replace it soon. TL3's Pierce MidMount has been scrapped I believe, they are using TL17's old Pierce MidMount that underwent extensive repairs. No word on a timetable on its eventual replacement.

Also, we are being forced to accept delivery of the remaining KME pumper that was part of the last order. This piece has a dual stage HP pump. The City's Legal Dept. advised us that because it was so long into the process cancellation or refusal to accept delivery would result in legal action against us, that we would likely lose. As far as I know it will be assigned to E55. They don't trust it to work downtown & it's size makes it impractical in many sections of the city. The previous administration had no experience in specing a piece for this part of the country, and it shows.

Thanks bro. Wasn't sure how the new regime felt about tda s. Thinking just a couple would work well in certain parts of the city. The north sure has a few running around. Thought I had heard something about rescue two . And it amazes me how time flies. Those two Towers just don't seem that old to me . I know it's never been popular , but I for one think the bean could truly use what towers bring to the table tactically.

There's a couple different issues with TDA's: Obviously cost is a big one. Size as compared to our current firehouses is also a major issue. We brought one down to E8/L1 (Hanover St, North End) & backed it into the firehouse. The tillerman's cab was flush with the back wall, the front bumper was about 1' from the bay door. We need bigger firehouses first. Developers have reportedly approached the city with proposals to build as many as SIX new firehouses built into high rises! We'll see how many, if any, come to fruition, but there's chatter.

How have all the KME's been disposed of?

The aerials, except for L16 which we're keeping, are all gone. They were wholesaled to a 3rd party. We've put 9 E\-One Metros in service since the spring. Prototype of the new E\-One pumper should be here soon, assuming everything checks out were scheduled to get 11 of them delivered by August 2017, with another 11 coming in 2018. At that point ALL the KME & Pierce pumpers will be gone, except perhaps for E55 which is getting a new KME any day now because we were forced to accept delivery of it.

Does Ladder 16 have a different powertrain set up then the other rear-mounts?

Yes, the KME's that we're keeping have Cummins engines; the ones we're disposing of have Navistar MaxxForce ones

Do you know what the job number is? Many of the units in process have only a job number, no department or city name.

Boston is out to bid for 9 more aerials. 3 per year, first group in March of 2018, next group 1 year later and another 1 year after that. They are single rear axle 100' rear mount aluminum aerials.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Pierce the only one that offers that?

Correct. Also we're going to Ocala later this month to inspect the first piece off the line, to be assigned to Engine 16. It should be in service in April or May followed by 22 identical ones over the rest of the year. They will first replace the KME's assigned to Engines 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 14, 17, 22, 33, 37, 41, 42, 52 & 53. Next to go will be the Pierces assigned to Engines 8, 9, 18, 20, 30, 32, 48, 50, 55 & 56.
