RX burns in the South East US (LA, AL, FL) 2/7 - 2/27/15

I just finished a 20 day detail to the South East US working prescribed burns in three states.

I found UTVs with small water tanks are quite popular in this area of the country

The cold weather hitting the East and South East chased us the whole trip. It snowed 2 days after this burn, next stop Alabama.

There are four National Forests in Alabama, run as one unit, The National Forests of Alabama (ALF). They run several Type 7 engines built on 3/4 ton trucks, typically 150 gallons with 50-100 gpm aux pumps.

Once again weathered out, so off to Florida

First stop Eglin Air Force Base, multiple small burns of 50 to 150 acres.

The Long Leaf Pine of the South East is very well adapted to fire

Eglin runs many of these UTVs equipped with tanks, most meet the specs for a Type 7 engine (min 50 gallons, 10 gpm)

Woodpecker hole channels the smoke from a cavity burning in the tree creating a horizontal smoke column. The smoke was exiting under strong pressure.

Once again the weather caught up to us, so off to South Florida and the Picayune-Strand State Forest.
