New Orleans
#1
New Orleans will be the host city for the 2016 International Fire Buffs Association Annual Convention.  The Doubletree Hotel on Canal St will be the site with a special rate of $129.00 per night. (Normal rate is $269.00/night).  New Orleans has a very busy interesting and friendly fire department and is looking forward to your visit.  The convention site is in very close proximity to the French Quarter, Riverwalk and Jackson Square.

Additional information will be forthcoming around the end of March, but save the dates.  August 16 to August 20.

Great opportunity for fire photography, history, and general networking with people that have the same interest as us.

Happy New Year

Has New Orleans gotten any new rigs in the last few years. I know the have some late 90's Pierce and 2000 ALF's.

They got a few Pierce Impel pumper in 2009/10 and bids are out for engines (10+) right now. In reading some of the questions, it appears they are based off the LA County pumper spec.

Ergo the convention will be a tremendous opportunity to shoot these rigs.

See you there.

Convention planning meeting held this weekend and plans are being firmed up and should be released within a month.

Looking towards a sleeker more customer based event, that not only will be less expensive, it will provide ample opportunity to visit the town.  Within two blocks of the hotel ( which is being completely renovated), there is probably more to do and see than there is in Times Square.  This does not include the Working Fire last night that you could have comfortably watched from your hotel room, if it was one facing the river.

Mark you calendars for August 16 to August 29 and watch this site for additional information.

Come one, come all

Here is the schedule for the 63 rd IFBA Convention to be held at the Double Tree by Hilton on Canal St in the heart of New Orleans

Wed  8/17    Opening Ceremony  0900

Presentation by Chief Tommy Stone of St Bernard FD about Hurricane Katrina

Thurs.  8/18   Bus tours starting at 0830 of  New Orleans EMS, NOFD's newest Station E-39, Lower 9th Ward, New Orleans 911 Center, NOFD Museum.  Lunch will be provided

Fri.  8/19    Bus tours starting at 0830 to Gretna Fire Museum, Terry Town VFD with a working Ahrens Fox, David Crockett VFD the oldest operating VFD in the country, and the Jefferson Parish EOC.  Lunch will be provided

Sat. 8/20    Bus tours starting at 0830 and featuring an apparatus line up on NOFD equipment.  There is a chance that photo opportunities for ships, trains and Mardi Gras floats may happen.  Lunch will be provided.   The Banquet will be in the evening

The cost for all this is $325.00, but if you register before 7/1/2016, you will get a $25.00 discount.

The IFBA website  ifba.org has additional informational and the registration form as well as a link to get discounted rooms at the Double Tree.  My understanding is that the blocked rooms are going fast.  Breakfast and discounted valet parking are included in the hotel room rate.

Because there is so much to do in New Orleans, the organized tours will be ending about 1400 each day so attendees can explore New Orleans on there own, and if they wish visit nearby fire related attractions.

Hope to see many of you in "Norlins" this summer.

Didn't New Orleans release bids for new pumpers a long while ago?  What ever happened with that?

Once the bids closed in November, I never saw or heard anything else about it. You can find the bid package on line but there isn't anything else about it.
