Fire Video Songs
#1
Some thoughts on songs for firefighting videos.

First let me say we all know it is ILLEGAL to add any copy written song to a video for public broadcast or redistribution. I am posting here some song suggestions simply as thought provokers. All suggestions and references to songs and videos are hypothetical.

I've been producing an annual year-in-view video for the Aurora (IL) Fire Department for the past few years. Each incorporates three to five songs and like most folks I initially found it difficult to find appropriate music. I’m happy to say these AFD Videos have attained a cult-like following among the 200+ firefighters and their families, and so I’m now getting frequent suggestions for new songs that “they heard on the radio” . . . .

Although I’ve seen Backdraft, Shine Your Light, and Standing Outside the Fire, used in various videos with great success, I like to be a bit more subtle with some of my music selections. I find many of the best songs aren’t true fire songs -- that is they don’t have “hot” fire” or “hero” anywhere in the title or lyrics! Take for example Superman (It’s not easy) by Five for Fighting, or Crawling in the Dark by Hoobastank. Both are pop-culture songs (it’s awful, when I hear them playing at the supermarket I can’t help but visualize the images I’ve edited to them on the screen!)

When editing a video, I take great pride in deftly matching the individual song lyrics up with the photo/video on the screen so that a firefighter on his hands-and-knees worn out after a fire is pictured with the lyric, “…Fall upon my knees” from the song Superman, or a dramatic slow-motion clip of firefighters entering a smoky building are set to the Elvis song Only Fools Rush In. My favorite paring was from my first video, and it featured dive-rescue and haz-mat photos set to the oldies hit Splish-Splash I’m a taken a Bath! (sing it, and you’ll see it could work!) *Smile*

My last bit of general advice -- mix it up a bit. As I said our videos are approximately 10 to 15 minutes long and include (at least parts of) several songs. I usually start with a “fire” song -- something fast, and hot to show off all the blaze-of-glory photos, and by the end of the show we’ve evolved though a funny-buddy-kinda song (We Go Together, Who Let The Dogs Out, or He Ain't Heavey) a remember the old-days kinda song with retirement photos and images from our museum’s collection (Yesterday, Heroes and Friends), then we usually end with a feel-good, individual-hero, make-em-cry, kinda song, (The Measure Of A Man, Walk of Life, Shine Your Light, Superman).

Here -- after years of searching online -- is my master song list.
Here's one I did. . . . . I used Alan Parson's Project "Sirius" which is commonly heard at sports stadiums. Let me know what you think.
Great choice of music, no lyrics, but defiantly recognizable and gets the crowd "fired up" (pardon the pun!)

The only problem, this was used for many years as the opening for the Chicago Bulls. So (as a Chicagoan) when I first heard the opening chords, my mind was immediately filled with images of Michael Jordan, Scotty Pippin, and all the rest dashing out onto a court and I kept wanting to hear an announcer’s voice boom those famous words, "And NOW Heeeeeere are your CHIC-AGO-BULLLllllllllsss...... :-)

Thanks Kooky!

Great additions Hoss!

I especialy appreciate your thoughts/suggestions for the video's theme . . .

We've got a haz-mat drill tomorrow that I'm supposed to be filming. It's hard to find appropriate "haz-mat" music. . . .

The best I've found is the jazz song "Zoot Suit Riot" by Cherry Poppin' Daddies (which only sorta works)

and the song "Toxic" by Britney Spears.

. . . I might just haveta use that song "Flirtin with Disaster!" -- Thanks!

Keep 'em comming.

That's my signature. That is not an idea, lol. It's just what my Windows Media Player plays and is constantly updated to the www.last.fm server everytime a song is played. But, I will get to scrounging up some of my music.

Now, there is a site where you can play (streaming 32kbps) music from, www.song2play.com. It's free to stream, but there are ALOT of pop-ups. If your using Mozilla Firefox and not IE, you should be fine and only get one, but if your using IE I would expect alot of pop-ups.

I would like to nominate this song “We’re the Sunday Drivers” as the new/official theme song for reckless fire apparatus drivers. ;-) Anyone want to second that nomination?

Found on www.archive.org's 78 rpm collection . . .

Of course not -- that's what I posted it for, to be used, added to, and passed around. The only thing I'd ask is to try and keep this list as up-to-date as possible, so please add any songs that get suggested on the other forum to this thread here as well.

I'd also be curious what other forum you're talking about. Do they have any videos posted there? I love looking at other peoples work.
