my 1950 alf 700

I just picked up my alf 700 that i bought. Im looking for information on this rig i was told that it was bought for the plymouth indiana fd from alf at the chicago worlds fair. Im looking for a picxture or a ad for this truck prior to plymouth getting it. i bought this truck from plymouth who bought it new in 1950 and kept it till last saturday. Plymouth took it out of front line service in 1985 and only used it as a prade truck since then.

Nice find, looks like it's in pretty good shape too! BTW Chicago had it's World Fair in 1933, might have been another type of expo in Chicago in 1950 they bought it at. Any chance American LaFrance might have old papers/photos for ya?

If I remember correctly, it has a Model "J" V-12 Engine in it, Frank. It's the same engine that one of ours has.

I would agree that the light bar should be given consideration for removal. If a roof light is needed, I might suggest a Federal Model 17 Beacon Ray. This would be a period light.



However, the apparatus owner has the ultimate call on removing and replacing equipment on the rig.

I totally agree, the owner has the full call on what to remove and keep, it just doesn't seem to fit that rig, period wise.

Whereas a Mars Aurora Borealis would be a handsome addition to this classic, let me suggest it is not a period light. To my knowledge, it came out in the 1960s. Also, if one can be found, it will be somewhat pricey-I have seen these go on eBay for anywhere from $800-$1200 or more.



I think that period lights would be the Mars FL 8 or "sweeper", a Buckeye Roto Ray, a Mars DX-40 "Football Light" or the aforementioned Federal Model 17 Beacon Ray. All except the Model 17 Beacon will be expensive-I guess expensive all depends on one's perspective.

It would look great with the SirenLite alone, too. The pictures I have of it were all taken before the addition of that light bar.



Jason, do you have any plans on taking your new toy out to any parades or musters? I'd love to see it sometime and take up-to-date pictures of it.

The Sterling Siren Lite alone will keep the authenticity of the apparatus. However, another period warning light certainly would not hurt.
