G** d**n Ebay Shillbidders
#1
Tonight I discovered a shillbidder. for those who dont know what a shillbidder is, its someone who uses another ebay user to boost the prices of his auctions. and I found one. and he did it a lot -and once to me! more disturbing is that I know him and never would have thought he would pull this shit. And he is a member of this forum as well... maybe he will see himself... maybe he wont. I'm not gonna out him yet. but he's got some "splainin to do".

If its happened repeatedly, report it to ebay. They can track the patterns. I've reported people more than once. Ebay won't tell you what they do as a result of the report, but sometimes certain user IDs just disappear.

I should also add...be surprised by nothing. The economy sucks. People have a lot of money tied up in their collections and hobbies and might be in a tough spot. They will do a lot to stay above water, especially if they think no one is watching. Sad but true.

Ask around with collectors and dealers, nothing is moving right now expect very high quality stuff. The advanced collectors don't stop in bad times, but the new ones back off or don't ever start. The prices were so high when the economy was booming, that poeple spent money on anything and are still trying to get big money back. If they spent money they didn't have, they are now in over their heads. Doesn't make it any better when they are taking the money out of your pocket though. Simple thing for sellers with a lot of money tied up in something is to put a reserve on items, but that scares many bidders away. So they take the cheaters way out.

Now if money isn't an issue for the person who did this, I say name names, but that's just my opinion.

Ebay was notified last night. I have gotten people thrown off before with a whole lot less to go on than I found with this case, but lately it seems that Ebay doesnt really give a shit as long as the revenue keeps coming in. He must have seen himself within the post because this morning out of the blue I got an email from his shillpartner asking why he couldnt bid on my auctions(because I blocked him and his buddy) because "he was starting a collection". pretty funny, since I've been selling the same material for a month and never heard from him before and he never bid on any of my auctions before...

See if you find this funny: past 30 days. bidder(the shill) bids on 77 different items. 80% are from 1 seller(the shill seller), which means he bid on about 62 items from that 1 seller, and apparently only won 4 of them. furthermore, feedback left for the shill buyer indicates that he cancelled 2 of them. so of 62 different items, the bidder only won 2? no way... On the 2 that were cancelled I have no doubt at all that the seller found the legit bidder's high bid point(or thought he did) and tried to boost him. It didnt work and the shill got stuck with it.

I've been doing Ebay for almost 11 years, almost since the beginning of it. I know all the tricks and BS. This is no coincidence.

No doubt about it. Rotten as all hell. In that case there are no excuses.

I got another one. A repeated offender who bids items through the roof to eliminate competition and then tries to back out, negotiate a lower price or just get pieces he wants. Often comes with a good bs or sob story too. He just did it again to someone on ebay. To me, if you cannabalize a nice antique you ruin it. This guy doesn't care, rips fronts off helmets that a guy wore his whole career and destroys a piece of history. Crossbronx had a run in with him too with a bounced check. Tough to believe you get that from a guy on the job, but they are out there.

well,

he has noticed himself... he asked what he can do to make me drop it. Here it is... only a public apology. since I know you read this, come clean... The hobby is based on trust. when you had your buddy bid to raise the auction I was bidding on, you violated that trust. I cannot believe it. I thought you were my friend. you were in my house. looking thru my stuff. you could have had pretty much everything you wanted from me. instead you bid up an auction? thats stealing from me(not to mention everyone else...). nothing you offered me last night to drop it will work. I dont want anything you offered, money, slides, nothing. That would make me complicit in your little scheme. and I cant be bought off. All I want is an apology. here...
#13
My name is Cody and I guess you can't start a new hobby. I was the person bidding on the members items. The ones he posted I was interested in but didnt want to spend the money that others did as its a new hobby of mine. I will even post a snap shot of my current ebay information to show that I don't only bid on his items. Hell I even bid on train slides. Am I not allowed to do this? He doesn't sell direct to me because he wants to give everyone the opportunity. The items that were canceled he thought should go to the other person more than me and I didnt have a problem with this. Unfortunately I don't have the money to put into this to go much over the prices that I did. I don't sit arround all day worring about slides like some people do. Its a hobby not a job. You know you guys really deter people from bettering themselves. I even got a new camera and went on some trips this summer with him. I'm just not sure if its worth it to put up with BS from you guys like this.

ok, sit back, its a lot to digest... I didnt want to out him, but your post makes it necessary to show the theory as it is.

nice cover. as long as you're posting, here's all the auctions. the ones you posted you bid on only after I made my post. In the past 30 days this is your bid history. 87 items. excluding the 12 auctions way down at the bottom which you bid on after this situation came to light-that leaves 75. of those 75, 9 were for train stuff. that leaves 66. Those remaining 66 are for Fire Apparatus slides. of all the people selling apparatus slides on ebay you bid on 2 different peoples auctions. 3 from one seller. 63 were from your buddy. and you only won 4. and two of those indicate a cancellation.

63 items from one seller you know very very well, and you expect me to believe there was nothing going on?

I have been selling slides for a month, some nice rare stuff too, I never heard from you until yesterday morning. not that I care if you bid on my stuff or not but its a little odd, dontcha think?

now, lets look at the first one. it went for 51.00. you are bidder c***0(65)

51.00 for one slide. you bumped it to 50.00. you're 19 years old. do you honestly expect me to believe that a 19 year old kid would really legit bid 50.00 on a slide? I wouldn't do it and I make 6 figures + a year and I am into this hobby more than most. lots of others were bumped way up as well, some over 20.00, most over 10.00 and you expect me to believe its legit? I was 19 years old once. It would never would have occured to me to spend 20.00 on a piece of film much less fifty. What I believe is that you guys found the bid point of certain buyers and you drove them to that point because your friend asked you to, figuring nobody would find out. many bidders like to bid even, nice clean amounts which would make this easy. I have found lots of people doing this over the years, Ebay used to boot them right off, now its about how much revenue they bring in...

Additionally, if it were not true, why did your friend text me last night asking, and I quote:"What will it take to drop the topic on ebay? Money back and the slide? plus the ones i just sent". If I had dont nothing wrong I wouldn't try and buy someones silence.

I would hoped he would have come on here and told us it was a mistake. no. on second thought. I would have hoped his text last night would have said, "no you're wrong. I know him, he lives in my town, rides on my rig, and also the ambulance, no? but he is just building a collection. its just a coincidence he was only bidding on my stuff." but that didnt happen... now out of the blue you pop up and tell us I'm his friend and he wanted everyone to have a chance to bid.

a friend would say ok, great you're starting a collection- give me a buck or two each and they're yours and not bid high for it and maybe you'll get it.

sorry, I dont buy the goods your selling here...

Ahhhh The Jersey Kid......... He has ruined more Helmets from Boston ! ! Just ruined that L23 helmet selling the device after taking it off the helmet and the helmet is up with someones else selling it!

[/quote]

Nope I think he's selling the newer L23 front he had already (probably at a loss too) and keeping the one he got off the helmet which he bid $335 on but didn't buy. And believe me there wasn't a big difference between the two of the fronts to begin with. He "negotiated" to buy just the L23 front he wanted off the helmet for $99 (or so) after jacking up the price on everyone else.

The "L23" helmet is being relisted by the original seller with no front. I tried to explain the reality of the situation to her, but I don't think she really understood. She'll understand when she can't bring down close to the $335 winning bid price when she could have got $330 from the under bidder if she told the Jersey Kid to take a hike when he wanted to play let's make a deal. But she got her money back after buying the L23 helmet at an auction in Medford a few days before Thanksgiving (which I now kick myself for not going to), so she didn't care. Me I'd be pretty pissed if I was about to lose maybe $100 or so out of my pocket. Funny thing is he could buy the helmet at a lower price now and put it back together and screw her even further.

I was just about to give the kid a second chance after I bought some stuff on ebay from him. He just does not get it. Unless something is completely beyond salvage I don't see any good reason for wrecking a piece of history. What ever happened to not buying something unless you want it and can afford to pay for it?

E Bay seems to have become quite the money maker for some folks . Weve all seen how much fire memorabilia has taken off in the lsat couple of years . Im sure youve heard of some of the horror stories that have occured when the vultures swoop in when a collector passes away . Alot of the time the poor widow has very little idea of the value her loved ones collection was truly worth .

So I suppose none of this really surprises me . But what sucks about it is how much it offends those of us who truly love the history and tradition aspect of the job , only to see it becomming increasingly fleeced by folks that only care about a buck...

it is interesting that in the last 12 hours all feedback you left for your buddy codeman61090 for the last month and a half has disappearred, and his feedback rating is now 63. last night it was 65. I have never seen a feedback go down without someone getting a negative. and he doesnt have one. both the feedback you gave him on the Oldwick, NJ and on the McLean VA slides he "won" are both gone. In both of those feedbacks you indicated that the transaction was cancelled without a problem.

so I ask the question. WHY DID YOU REMOVE THE FEEDBACK INDICATING YOU DID NOT GO THRU ON THE TRANSACTIONS? If you had nothing to hide you didnt have to.

Cody above even said you didnt want to sell to him because "the other guy " would like them more. what a crock of crap. and now the feedback for those has disappearred. Why? if it were a legit transaction so be it. but it wasnt and now you are hiding it. you guys conspired to bid up the auction and when you got stuck with it you decided to send Jim(and yes, he knows, and will probably be contacting you) a second chance auction. nobody legit bids on 63 auctions in a month from one seller and wins only 4. nobody.

Mike,

Sorry you got another SCUMBAG playing games........I love these people! As for me, i'll OUT the little DOUCHEBAG from Jersey City....His name is Mike Berth and he's a Jersey City Fireman on either Engine 17 or 15, he lives in Atlantic Highlands, NJ. His Ebay screenname has changed many times over the past 2 years since he likes to remain anonymous after screwing someone over. He was originally JCFDHoseman, then he changed it to JCFDChargingtheline, then something else, and he's currently FIREDOG627...........One word for him......SCUMBAG!!!!! He's personally screwed more people that I personally know (including myself) than anyone i've ever dealt with on ebay. The problem is that he had some really nice Camden and Newark fronts that I was interested in, so I got involved with this kid by bidding, and it ALWAYS turned into some kind of drama, complete with excuses that he either lost the items in shipping or that it was "stolen out of my locker in the firehouse". <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_crazy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Icon_crazy' /> Amazingly, it would pop up again on ebay for a higher price than what I had won the item for originally. I have seen him completely jacking the Boston fronts through the roof, then claiming that he doesn't have the money, or some other lame excuse.

BEWARE OF THIS GUY!!!!! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/machinegun.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Machinegun' />

dont forget he called himself bostonfirecollector and joanne5461. the joanne name was the shill. Was thrown off.. That was an easy one. this joanne name would only bid on his items, a fire front, a golf club, a scarf. no way it was legit. items in one genre, maybe. not anything and everything. the thing that got the joanne name thrown off was a bike helmet. real oddball size and color. joanne listed it. bfc won it. a week later, joanne's selling it again! buh bye...

he got me once. bought a firebox for 325.00 buy it now and paid instantly. it never showed up. he always had a BS excuse but could never provide proof of mailing. after 2 months and a chargeback to my visa I finally got my money back. what do you think came up for bid a month after? the same box, with the same identifiable mark on it. this time it was 425.00 buy it now!!! I bought it the second time and it showed up, but he would never allow me to stop down in JC and pick it up, like you would think the brotherhood would dictate...

I was watching his auctions for a while after that. it was amazing the same thing was happening to others. He listed stuff with real lowball buy it now's and they would get scooped up instantly, then the items would get lost in the mail. then they would reappear later on for a higher price. I agree about the helmets he is destroying. all to make a buck. if you watch his items close, he isnt a good businessman. most of the time he doesnt get what he paid for it a week or two before...

and i still remember the Allentown story you told me... please please i gotta have these fronts. I've been looking for them for a long time... I dont have a lot of money... later that night... they're all on EBAY! lolol

Take my money and not deliver the goods.

That is theft.

I wonder how many people have filed charges?
