What is Firepics?
Posted 26 December 2011 - 03:33 AM
Non-Photo Specific forums include Apparatus Scuttlebutt, Department Scuttlebutt, Manufacturer Scuttlebutt, Fire Service Related, Non-Fire Service Related, Q&A, Photography Discussion, Fire Service Trivia and a Firehouse Kitchen.
Information on Firepics is usually well ahead of the trade and buff magazines, with photos of apparatus appearing long before you can see them in print.
Why is there a subscription fee?
The majority images that appear on Firepics are stored on the Firepics Server. This ensures that there will not be any issues of broken images that occur with offsite photo hosting. Unfortunately, this also requires a dedicated server at a cost of $175.00 per month, software licenses, support contracts and many other costs. Annual costs of the website are approximately $3000. The subscription fees offset the costs of operating the server, which has had over 99.95% uptime over the past three years and the other associated costs.
The second reason for the subscriptions is that Firepics respects your right to your photos. Firepics will never redistribute, reproduce, sell or otherwise knowingly allow your work to appear elsewhere. You are the photographer, and it's your photo(s). The subscription keeps people honest, and image theft is not a concern on this website. Firepics also does not include a blanket "release" that allows us to use your photo as we see fit, which cannot be said for other sites.
Finally, the subscriptions keep spammers away. Only paid subscribers can access the main forums, and most spammers won't pay to gain access. Firepics has been spam free since the implementation of the subscriptions in 2007.
The subscription fee is significantly less that what you pay for a magazine subscription, and there's always something new each time you visit. Please consider subscribing-There's a money-back guarantee, so you have nothing to lose.
